Individual’s needs are a result of experience acquired through life. Leaders can motivate subordinates by understanding the individual needs and finding ways to foster acquiring those needs.

For example, Susan has a high need for personal power and often manipulates her family, friends and employees to do her work for her. She later takes credit for it. On the other hand, those power seekers who need institutional or social power work to use their power to help mobilize efforts aimed at organizational goals.
